Over de film
Hoe kun je een gewelddadig leven leren begrijpen? Abdi is afkomstig uit Somalië, hij is meubelontwerper en sociaal werker. Samen met zijn buurman, filmmaker Douwe, speelt hij zijn door oorlog en criminaliteit getekende leven na. Door middel van speelse reconstructies in een special effects-studio gaan ze samen op reis. Het resultaat is een openhartig en speels onderzoek naar een pijnlijke geschiedenis, met een prominente rol voor het maakproces.
Buurman Abdi is een documentaire van Douwe Dijkstra en Abdiwahab Ali, geproduceerd door Valk Productions en EOdocs. De film ging in 2022 in première op het Locarno Film Festival in Zwitserland en won diverse prijzen op internationale filmfestivals. De film duurt 29 minuten en werd op 8 november 2022 in Nederland uitgezonden op NPO2.

”In deze film komen veel vertelvormen en technieken samen die ik heb onderzocht in mijn voorgaande films, zoals opnames van schaalmodellen en acteurs op greenscreen en een hoofdrol voor het werk achter de schermen. Het is een documentaire over de omgang met een gewelddadig verleden. Ook is het een film over het leren kennen van je buurman en over de vraag hoe ik me als filmmaker kan verhouden tot het levensverhaal van iemand anders. Ondanks alle special effects en geënsceneerde beelden zijn momenten van spontane interactie tussen Abdi, mijzelf en alle mensen die aan de film meewerkten het hart van de film. Een intiem portret van het maakproces.”

“In deze film is mijn levenspad te zien, het verhaal dat mij gemaakt heeft tot wie ik nu ben. Deze film wilde ik maken om anderen te laten zien dat je een product bent van je omgeving. Ik gebruik de film in workshops in gevangenissen en scholen. De film is de start van een gesprek over hoe professionals in deze instellingen hun cliënten kunnen benaderen als mens en niet als casus. Aan de jongeren en gedetineerden met wie ik werk, laat ik zien dat je niet bent wat je hebt gedaan en dat het nooit te laat is om te veranderen.”
